What do wasps look like?
Wasps are slender insects with a distinctive narrow waist between their thorax and abdomen. They have two pairs of wings, with the front pair being larger than the hind pair. Their bodies are typically black and yellow striped, though some species may have different color patterns. They have smooth, hairless bodies (unlike bees), and their antennae are relatively long. Wasps have powerful mandibles and a stinger that they can use multiple times. Their legs are long and slender, and they have compound eyes that provide excellent vision.
Common Wasp Types
Yellow Jacket
Vespula spp.
The most common and aggressive wasp species. They build paper nests in the ground, walls, or attics. Yellow jackets are social wasps that live in large colonies and are known for their aggressive behavior when defending their nests. They are attracted to sweet foods and meat, making them common pests at outdoor events.
Paper Wasp
Polistes spp.
Less aggressive than yellow jackets, paper wasps build distinctive umbrella-shaped nests under eaves and overhangs. They have long legs that dangle when flying and are generally more docile unless their nest is threatened. They are beneficial predators of garden pests but can become a nuisance when nesting near homes.
Hornet
Vespa spp.
Larger than other wasp species, hornets build large paper nests in trees, shrubs, or buildings. They are generally less aggressive than yellow jackets but can be dangerous due to their size and venom potency. Hornets are efficient predators and can help control other insect populations, but their nests should be removed by professionals if near human activity.
Mud Dauber
Sceliphron spp.
Solitary wasps that build distinctive mud nests on walls and ceilings. They are generally non-aggressive and rarely sting humans. Mud daubers are beneficial as they prey on spiders and other insects. Their nests are made of mud tubes and are often found in protected areas like garages and sheds.
