What do spiders look like?

Spiders are arachnids with two main body parts: the cephalothorax (head and thorax combined) and the abdomen. They have eight legs, no antennae, and typically eight eyes. Their bodies are covered in hair-like structures called setae. Spiders come in various sizes and colors, from tiny jumping spiders to large tarantulas. They are known for their ability to produce silk and build webs.

Common Types of Spiders

Black Widow

Latrodectus spp.

Known for their distinctive red hourglass marking. They are venomous and prefer dark, secluded areas. Their bite can be dangerous to humans.

Brown Recluse

Loxosceles reclusa

Identified by their violin-shaped marking. They are venomous and prefer dark, undisturbed areas. Their bite can cause serious tissue damage.

Wolf Spider

Lycosidae spp.

Large, hairy spiders that hunt on the ground. They are fast runners and don't build webs. They are generally harmless to humans.

Jumping Spider

Salticidae spp.

Small, colorful spiders with excellent vision. They are active hunters and can jump long distances. They are harmless to humans.

Signs of Spider Infestation

Webs

Different types of webs indicate different spider species. Orb webs are circular, while cobwebs are irregular and messy.

Egg Sacs

Small, round or oval sacs made of silk. They can contain hundreds of eggs and are often found in hidden areas.

Sightings

Seeing spiders frequently, especially in large numbers, may indicate an infestation. Some species are more active at night.

Bites

While rare, spider bites can occur. They may cause pain, swelling, or other symptoms depending on the species.
