What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are small, flat, oval-shaped insects that are reddish-brown in color. They are about the size of an apple seed and can be seen with the naked eye. After feeding, they become engorged and turn a darker red color. Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae, and their bodies are covered in short, golden hairs.
Signs of Bed Bug Infestation
Bed Bug Bites
Bed bug bites often appear in a line or cluster on exposed skin. They are typically red, itchy, and may become swollen. Some people may not react to bed bug bites at all.
Blood Stains
Small blood stains on sheets, pillowcases, or mattresses may indicate bed bug activity. These stains are typically dark red or brown.
Shed Skins
Bed bugs shed their skins as they grow. These shed skins are translucent and can be found near their hiding places.
Eggs
Bed bug eggs are tiny, white, and about the size of a pinhead. They are often found in clusters and are difficult to see without magnification.
Common Hiding Places
Mattresses
Bed bugs often hide in the seams, tufts, and folds of mattresses. They may also be found in the box spring and bed frame.
Furniture
Bed bugs can hide in cracks and crevices of furniture, especially near where people sleep or sit for long periods.
Walls
Bed bugs can hide behind loose wallpaper, in electrical outlets, and in cracks in walls and baseboards.
Luggage
Bed bugs can hitchhike in luggage, backpacks, and other personal items when traveling.
