What do silverfish look like?

Silverfish are small, wingless insects with a distinctive teardrop-shaped body. They have three long tail-like appendages at the end of their body and two long antennae on their head. Their bodies are covered in silvery scales, giving them a metallic appearance. They move in a fish-like motion, which is how they got their name.

Common Types of Silverfish

Common Silverfish

Lepisma saccharina

The most common type of silverfish, found worldwide. They prefer dark, damp areas and feed on carbohydrates like sugars and starches.

Firebrat

Thermobia domestica

Similar to silverfish but prefers warmer temperatures. They are often found near heat sources like furnaces and water heaters.

Giant Silverfish

Ctenolepisma longicaudata

Larger than common silverfish, these insects are found in homes and can cause more significant damage to paper and fabric items.

Four-lined Silverfish

Ctenolepisma lineata

Distinguished by four dark lines on their body. They are common in homes and can damage books, wallpaper, and clothing.

Signs of Silverfish Infestation

Damage to Materials

Small, irregular holes in paper, books, wallpaper, and fabric. Look for yellow stains or small black specks (droppings) near damaged items.

Shed Skins

Small, translucent skins left behind after molting. These are often found in dark, damp areas where silverfish hide.

Droppings

Small, black pepper-like specks found near food sources or in areas where silverfish are active. These are their fecal pellets.
