What do rats look like?
Rats are medium-sized rodents with long, hairless tails and pointed snouts. They have large ears, small eyes, and sharp incisors that grow continuously. Their bodies are covered in fur that can be brown, black, or gray. Rats have four toes on their front feet and five toes on their hind feet, all with sharp claws for climbing and digging.
Common Types of Rats
Norway Rat
Rattus norvegicus
Also known as the brown rat or sewer rat, these are the most common rats in urban areas. They are excellent swimmers and burrowers, often living in underground tunnels.
Roof Rat
Rattus rattus
Also known as the black rat or ship rat, these rats are excellent climbers and often live in trees or the upper parts of buildings. They have longer tails than Norway rats.
Wood Rat
Neotoma spp.
Also known as packrats, these rats build large nests from sticks and other materials. They are found in wooded areas and are known for collecting shiny objects.
Cotton Rat
Sigmodon spp.
These rats are found in grassy areas and agricultural fields. They have shorter tails and are known for their ability to damage crops.
Signs of Rat Infestation
Droppings
Small, dark pellets found along walls, in corners, or near food sources. Fresh droppings are soft and moist, while older ones are hard and dry.
Gnaw Marks
Fresh gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or electrical wires. Rats gnaw to keep their teeth sharp and to gain access to food or shelter.
Tracks and Runways
Grease marks along walls or baseboards, and well-worn paths in dust or dirt. Rats follow the same paths repeatedly, creating visible trails.
Nests
Nests made from shredded paper, fabric, or other soft materials. Look for nests in hidden areas like attics, wall voids, or under appliances.
