What do fleas look like?
Fleas are small, wingless insects with a flattened body that allows them to move easily through fur or feathers. They are typically dark brown or reddish-brown in color and range in size from 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. Fleas have long hind legs adapted for jumping, allowing them to leap up to 7 inches vertically and 13 inches horizontally. They have piercing mouthparts used to feed on blood.
Common Types of Fleas
Cat Flea
Ctenocephalides felis
The cat flea is the most common flea species in North America. Despite its name, it infests both cats and dogs, as well as other animals and humans. It is responsible for most flea infestations in homes.
Dog Flea
Ctenocephalides canis
The dog flea is less common than the cat flea but can still infest dogs, cats, and other animals. It is similar in appearance to the cat flea but has some distinguishing characteristics.
Human Flea
Pulex irritans
The human flea is less common in developed countries but can still be found in some areas. It infests humans and other animals, including pigs and dogs.
Signs of Flea Infestation
Bites
Flea bites on humans and pets are a common sign of infestation. They typically appear as small, red, itchy bumps, often in clusters or lines. Pets may scratch excessively due to flea bites.
Flea Dirt
Flea dirt (flea feces) appears as small, dark specks on pets' fur or in their bedding. It is actually dried blood and turns red when wet. Finding flea dirt is a strong indicator of an infestation.
Flea Eggs
Flea eggs are tiny, white, oval-shaped specks that may be found in pet bedding, carpets, or on pets' fur. They are difficult to see with the naked eye but can be detected with a magnifying glass.
Flea Larvae
Flea larvae are small, worm-like creatures that feed on organic debris and flea dirt. They are typically found in dark, humid areas like pet bedding, carpets, or cracks in floors.
