What do ants look like?

Adult ants species come in a variety of shapes and sizes but each will be one of three different colony castes; queens, workers or males. Queens are fertile females that lay all the eggs in a colony. Workers are wingless females that gather food, feed larvae, maintain the nest, defend the colony, and do not reproduce. Male ants are winged and their only job is to mate with the queens during the swarming process.

Ants That Bite or Sting

Acrobat Ant

Crematogaster spp.

Acrobat ants get their name from their ability to raise their abdomen over their thorax and head, especially when disturbed. They are known for their heart-shaped abdomen when viewed from above.

Army Ant

Ecitoninae spp.

Army ants are known for their aggressive hunting behavior and large colony sizes. They move in massive swarms and can consume thousands of prey items in a single day.

Cow Killer Ant

Dasymutilla occidentalis

Despite their name, cow killer ants are actually wasps. They are known for their extremely painful sting and bright red and black coloration.

Elongate Mexican Ant

Pseudomyrmex gracilis

These ants are known for their slender, elongated bodies and aggressive behavior. They can deliver painful stings and are often found in trees and shrubs.

Ants That Don't Bite or Sting

Argentine Ant

Linepithema humile

Argentine ants form supercolonies that can stretch for miles. They are known for their sweet tooth and often invade homes in search of sugary foods.

Crazy Ant

Paratrechina longicornis

Crazy ants get their name from their erratic, zigzag movement patterns. They are highly adaptable and can nest in a variety of locations.

Big Head Ant

Pheidole megacephala

Big head ants are named for their disproportionately large heads. They are common in tropical and subtropical regions and can form large colonies.

Citronella Ant

Lasius interjectus

Citronella ants emit a lemony scent when crushed. They are typically found in soil and under rocks, and rarely enter homes.

Mound Ant

Formica spp.

Mound ants build large, visible mounds in open areas. They are beneficial to the environment as they aerate soil and control other insect populations.
