What do moths look like?
Moths are flying insects that belong to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes butterflies. They have two pairs of wings covered in scales, a long proboscis for feeding, and antennae. Moths come in various sizes and colors, with some species having intricate patterns on their wings. Unlike butterflies, most moths are nocturnal and have feathery or thread-like antennae.
Common Types of Moths
Clothes Moth
Tineola bisselliella
These small moths are known for damaging wool, fur, and other natural fabrics. They are attracted to dark, undisturbed areas where they can lay their eggs.
Pantry Moth
Plodia interpunctella
Also known as Indian meal moths, these pests infest stored food products. They are attracted to grains, cereals, and other dry food items.
Gypsy Moth
Lymantria dispar
These invasive moths can defoliate trees and shrubs. They are known for their distinctive egg masses and hairy caterpillars.
Sphinx Moth
Sphingidae spp.
These large moths are known for their rapid flight and ability to hover like hummingbirds. They feed on nectar from flowers.
Signs of Moth Infestation
Damage to Fabrics
Holes or irregular patterns in wool, fur, or other natural fabrics. Look for silken tubes or cases where larvae have been feeding.
Cocoons and Larvae
Small, silken cocoons or webbing in corners, along baseboards, or in stored items. Look for small, white larvae crawling on surfaces.
Egg Masses
Small, white or cream-colored egg masses on surfaces or in food products. These can be difficult to spot but are a clear sign of infestation.
